Jolanda comforts earthquake victims

September 9, 1920

King Victor Emmanuel of Italy, accompanied by his wife, Queen Elena, and their eldest daughter, Princess Jolanda, today visited the smaller villages "which suffered disaster from the earthquake," reports the Associated Press.
The 19-year-old Princess Jolanda "proved almost as competent and practical" as her mother in "suggesting remedies and making lists of what was required" and above what had already been brought by car.
Jolanda "even had a store of toys with which she coaxed smiles from the frightened and fretful children." Queen Elena has ordered that a list be made of the children who have lost their parents or who "are to young to say to whom they belong."
